Naváděcí světlo (guiding light) používali námořníci na širém moři jako hlavní orientační bod pro výpočet kurzu. Tímto bodem byla většinou nejjasnější hvězda na obloze - Severka. "Guiding light" je i ustáleným výrazem pro "světlo majáku".
